Butters (1st & most important Ingredient of Beard Butter)

beard butter

Butter is the most important ingredient, and there are 3 different types of common butters available, you can use any one of these.

3 most common type of beard butters,

  1. Shea butter
  2. Cocoa Butter
  3. Mango Butter

Shea Butter: This butter is very easily available, and it’s a very common ingredient in the beard balms. It’s anti-inflammatory, and easy to absorb.

“Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree. It is ivory in color when raw, with more processed versions being white in color, although it is commonly dyed yellow with borututu root or palm oil.” (Source Wikipedia)

Cocoa Butter: it is very rich in vitamins and antioxidants. It’s a common ingredient for many moisturizers and beard balms, and we are also going to use it in our recipe of beard butter.

“Cocoa butter, also called theobroma oil, is a pale-yellow, edible fat extracted from the cocoa bean. It is used to make chocolate, as well as some ointments, toiletries, and pharmaceuticals. Cocoa butter has a cocoa flavor and aroma. Its melting point is just below human body temperature.” Wikipedia

Mango Butter: This butter is exceptionally rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants but it is harder to come by in comparison with the other two. We are going to use this one as well in our diy recipe of beard butter.

“Mango butter is a type of body butter made from mango seed (a.k.a. the pit). It’s similar to shea and cocoa butter in that it’s light and moisturizing without being greasy. “ Source

Waxes

beeswax

Waxes also must have ingredients in the beard butter and beard balm, and it’s because of its solid property, and we are going to use it in our beard butter as well, just because of this property of the waxes, and the most common and organic wax is the beeswax.

It is an optional ingredient, you can make beard butter without beeswax as well.

Alternatives: Soy wax and candelilla wax are the best alternatives to beeswax, it completely depends on your own preferences.

Note: Its up to you if you want to use beeswax or not but I suggest if you want your beard to behold then a small amount of beeswax will solve your problem.

Carrier oils

carrier oils

Carrier oils are the daily driver for every single person, and most of us start using this on our hairs from childhood. If you are not familiar, I have listed down all types of oils that can be used in it.

Carrier oil, make your beard butter most effective in terms of moisturizing and strengthening the beard. You can use one or blend of the different oils. These will give you the fragrance and as well make the wax soften.

Below are the different types of carrier oils, you can use any of these in beard butter:

  • Argan oil
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Walnut oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Camellia seed oil
  • Apricot oil
  • Kukui nut oil
  • Hazelnut oil
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Emu oil
  • Macadamia nut oil
  • Grapeseed oil

You can choose any from these all oils are good but my mine favorite is Argan Oil, Almond, Coconut oil and Jojoba. You can try any other oil, it’s personal preference. for benfits of different oils you can see Health Line Carrier Oil article.

Essential Oils / Other unscented Oils

essential oil

These types of oils are mostly blends of different oils, so if you are not going to use any carrier oil and want to try any existing essential oil, you can go ahead. It’s not necessary but completely your choice that if it suits you more or carrier oil.

  • 1/2 ounce of wax
  • 2-3 ounces of butter
  • 3 ounces of carrier oils
  • A few drops of essential oils

Beard Butter Cooking Steps:

Now mixing these ingredients is quite simple,

Heat the wax, butter, and carrier oils in a vat over low heat.

Keep monitoring it and not let them boil, the goal is just to melt things so we can blend these.

Once the mixture has completely melted, remove it from the heat.

Now mix out all the ingredients, and make sure that this looks perfectly blended.

Now take any container and store it. After cool down it will have a soft solid shape like a beard balm, and now it is ready to use.

I would like to point out some miss information in this article.
    1. A beard butter should have no wax in it (that is the difference between balm and butter)
    2. Carrier oils do not impart a fragrance that is what the essential oils are for.
    3. You can not leave out the carrier oils and replace them with essential oils.
    4. Essential oils are not a blend of oils in fact essential oils are a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.

You can make butters with beeswax and carrier oils then mix with a mixer til light and fluffy, it’s all about the ratio that determines the hardness and thickness

I’d like to point out some misinformation in matt’s comment.
      1. Given that Jojoba oil is a wax, the difference between ‘butter’ and ‘balm’ is the perceived consistency and application – not the actual contents, exactly like Taryn said. Yes, a butter isn’t meant to have the same hold as a balm, but that doesn’t mean it can’t contain wax.
      2. Carrier oils can impart fragrance. If I want my butter to smell like the oils, I don’t have to add oil scented essential oil to impart the scents imparted by the carrier oil.
      3. Essential oils can be a blend of essential oils. In fact, many essential oils ARE blends of oils extracted through various methods (not just steam distillation), ie eucalyptus oil. There are entire companies built on mixes of essential oils.

I believe beard butters do have beeswax in them, just a much smaller ratio of wax to butters/oils.

Balm has wax. Butter has very little if any. Carrier oils are not for fragrance, but for smoothness and workability.
